This unit discussed coursebooks and materials. There are two main types of materials used in the classroom, authentic and created. They are both useful and have their place but there are advantages and disadvantages to both, therefore it is best to use them to complement each other and the lesson being taught. Authentic materials are anything a native speaker would hear or read, such as newspapers, magazines, songs or films. These are not designed to teach ESL, especially beginner level, and should therefore be selected carefully. They are real and more interesting, and students can gain confidence when they succeed with the materials. Plus, they can be geared to the interests of the class. Created materials are those that are usually designed by the teacher to replace or supplement the coursebook materials. They include crosswords, word search, flash cards, and gap-fill exercises. Created materials can be geared to a specific lesson and can be graded at grade level, but they are supplemental materials, not the core of the lesson. This unit also discussed coursebooks and what role they play in the class room. What I learned from this unit is that coursebooks are to be used to know what needs to be taught, but be willing to supplement with your own materials to keep the lesson interesting and balanced. Make sure the students needs are being met, so if necessary, omit certain lessons or adapt them with your style that will motivate students.
