This unit reviews the various ways teachers can assess students? language levels. These can be done through tutorials given at the end of the week to review work done and see how students performed, evaluations by students to let the teacher know if the balance of skills being taught is effective, and a variety of tests. The common types of tests are placement, diagnostic, progress, practice, and proficiency. Tests can be given throughout different periods in a course. For example, placement tests are given to see which language level students should enroll in. Diagnostic tests are given to see what students know at the beginning of the course. Progress tests evaluate what the students are learning, and can be given weekly, monthly, or after a certain time frame in the course. Practice tests are similar to the actual exam and give the students an idea of what to expect. There are three main types of proficiency tests ? General English, Business English and Academic English. The General English consists of five levels of exams as part of the Cambridge Suite and varies based on the level of written and spoken skills. Business English includes one of three exams: TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), Cambridge BEC (Business English Certificate), and BULATS (Business Language Testing Service). Academic English exams consist of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
