This unit was useful because it really got me thinking about the various layers of using a language. Before reading this unit, I do not think I ever took the time to reflect on the importance of receptive skills in daily interactions and communications. Teaching a person to scan or skim, for example, is a skill that I would not have otherwise thought to implement into a teaching plan if I had not read this unit, however, it is extremely important. I also believe that teaching about skimming can be strategic in helping students to understand that learning a language is not so different from learning to read. As a young student, new to reading, I was encouraged to use reading as a skill to enhance my vocabulary and gain new language skills. Therefore, I believe, in a similar sense, as an instructor, I could find creative ways to use the receptive skills lessons in order to help my students feel comfortable listening when they do not understand ever word of a conversation. I could help them to understand that, as they are learning the language, active listening may also seem similar to skimming while reading. It is ok to listen attentively to understand the general idea of a discussion and important to avoid getting frustrated or confused if there are pieces, words or sections of the conversation that they do not fully understand. Learning is a process and, in time, they will be able to fill in the blanks if they actively practice both of their receptive skills.
