This unit dealt with some common problems and tricky situations an ESL teacher may face. I have been in all of these situations except for large classes, so the suggestions are very helpful for me. First lessons can be with either a new group or an existing group, but in both cases the teacher needs to build rapport with the students and establish the tone of the class. In a new group the students will also need to get to know each other. A course book shouldn?t be used in the first class. Instead, the lesson should be focused on learning about the students and their needs. Questionnaires are appropriate, along with ice breaking exercises. Warm up activities are essential to an enjoyable and productive class. Fun and short games are the best for getting everyone ready to work in English. In a mixed level group, the teacher can help keep stronger students engaged by giving them different tasks or different exercises altogether. They can also be paired with weaker students, which can help both of them learn and practice at the same time. Large classes can be tricky to manage, so instructions must be repeated and clarified. Group work and worksheets make the situation easier. Tips for preventing students from using the native language include: keep the material at the appropriate level, give clear instructions, and only respond in English. Some ideas to help with shy or reluctant students are: use lots of pair work, controlled practice, and role play.
