This unit discussed the evaluation and testing methods used in the classroom and around the world to evaluate students progess and knowledge of the English language. It is important to use placement or diagnostic tests to place students in the correct level. To be effective, these tests should include all 4 skills -- reading, writing, speaking and listening. In the classroom, teachers should use a form of progress tests to gauge what skills have been remembered/forgotten and what needs to be reviewed. Within progress testing a teacher may choose to use tutorials, a way to review the work done, aims of the lessons, students performance, and problems. They may also choose to use evaluation by students, a way for students to offer feedback of the materials used to help the teacher tweek the lessons; it also gives the students a better awareness of the information covered. If students will be taking external tests, it would be helpful if the teacher used practice tests to help students prepare. It is important that the practice tests be as similar as possible to the actual test taken. Finally there are external proficiency tests, which measure a students understanding of English. The most common are general English, business English and academic English. I found this section helpful, as I was not aware of the many different types of international English tests and what their purposes were. It seems to me this is much more prevelant in the UK than in the US.
