This unit discusses of different techniques and methods to teaching English as a foreign language. One of the most effective methods that was discussed in this unit is the Engage-Study-Activate (ESA). The engage portion tells of different activities to attract the student attention, such as games, music, pictures, stories, etc. The next phase of this method is the study, which involves the presentation of the language point and drilling of exercises. In this phase once a point is introduced, it is then followed by exercises to reinforce the materials that have been taught. The final stage is activate, which the students can use the new or old material they know freely. The goal of this stage is to be creative and get the students to use the new language comfortably in a setting that way they can recall the use in a different scenario. This is an effective method to use, but another method that I liked was the PPP (presentation, practice, and production) and the grammar-translation method. The PPP is effective for young learners because then you can use different techniques to make the learning fun, so that they will be further interested in the language. The grammar-translation is a much more effective method for advanced learners because then you can create sentences and therefore even teach students that are having further trouble with the language. The only problem with this method is that you will also need to be proficient with the other language as well.
