This can be the most frustrating aspect of English teaching. We are often not \"real teachers\" with the authority to discipline especially when we are dispatched from another private company. We cannot touch students even when they become violent towards each other. We have to call on other teachers to interact which can put some ELTs in awkward situations. Fights can break out quickly and they require quick responses from teachers. ELTs aren't really allowed to do that often on paper at least. Yet many end up having to do something. I do what I can to avoid situations where I have to directly discipline students. It is also harder today with more liberal-minded parents that are easily offended if you discipline their children. In the past, it seems that we could say a child is acting poorly and the parents would feel shame. Today, the parents are so afraid of losing face that they will often fight the teacher about the discipline and thus it is undermined. I try when possible to avoid it all together yet I recognize that this is exactly the opposite of what children really need. They need good parents, neighbors, and teachers to offer correction, discipline, and love in measure to ensure they grow and stay on the good path. It is nice though to teach in Asia where communities recognize these values and respect the teacher more as an authority figure in society. It is also nice to teach young adults that are self-motivated and need very little social correction.
