This unit focuses on Theories, Methods and Techniques for teaching English as a Foreign Language. The most of these, along with a brief description are explained in the paragraphs below. To begin, Grammar-translation; this methodology makes use of direct comparisons between the native language and target language. Audio-lingualism; this methodology focuses on repetitive drilling. Again, Presentation, Practice and Production; this methodology focuses on explaining and demonstrating the meaning and form of the new language. To add, Task-Based learning; this methodology focuses on activity completion rather than strict language form. Also, Community Language Learning; this methodology focuses typically on students, they set up circles and it is up to them to decide what topic they want to talk about. Here the teacher just stands outside the circle and help as and when necessary, with language problems that may occur. The Silent way; this methodology makes use of coloured rodes and phonemic charts. Suggestopaedia; this method largely focuses on the on the need for the students to be comfortable, confident and relaxed in order for learning to be more effective. The Lexical Approach; here words and sentences within a language are viewed as the building blocks of language learning. For this course we focus on Engage ? Study ? Activate (ESA), as it is felt to be the most effective and most logical of all the methodologies for new teachers to learn and apply in the classroom. The Engage phase, the aim is to warm up students and to get them thinking and speaking in English. Study phase, here students focus on the language (or information) and how it is constructed. Activate phase, here students are encouraged to use any/all of the language they know. All three ESA elements need to be present in most lessons to provide a balance range of activities for the studies. Examples of some lessons include; -Straight Arrow ESA lesson -Boomerang ESA lesson -Patchwork ESA lesson. Correction Techniques, the ability to correct is a skill that takes time and experience to perfect. In teaching English As A Foreign Language it is important to distinguish between Mistakes and Errors. A mistake can be thought of as a slip of the tongue or the pen while an error is something that is more deeply ingrained and may be made because; the student believes what he or she is saying is correct, or does not know the correct form, or knows the correct form but cannot get it right. Lesson Planning, general guideline notes are briefly explained below; All stage of the lesson, the teacher should only use English in the classroom and should avoid using the students native language. Engage phase, here the teacher ensures that every student speak some English. Study stage, here students should be learning new English language concepts. Activate stage, here the teacher is trying to encourage students to be creative with the English language they already have and the one they have learnt. To conclude, what I have personally learnt from this unit is the different Theories, Methods and Techniques of teaching English As a Foreign language (EFL) to speakers of other languages and learners of English.
