This unit focuses on the teaching of pronunciation and phonology. Phonology is the study, science analysis and classification of the physical properties of sounds. The term phonetics and phonology are often used interchangeable. Intonation is generally considered to be the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence whereas stress is more sentences with individual words. It carries a massage in a sentence .The normal pattern of intonation in a statement is the rise and fall intonation. Techniques for indicating and teaching intonation ? Nonsense words ? By gesture ? Humming or singing ? The board Stress: All multi-syllable words in English have one or more parts that are stressed but which part should it be ?one word has only one stress. We can only stress syllabus not individual vowels or consonant. Here are some examples. ? Stress on first syllables 2-syllables nouns-china, table 2-syllables adjectives-slender clever ? Stress on last syllables 2-syllable verbs-create, decide ? Stress on penultimate syllable ending in-ic-geographic, pathetic words ending in-sion and tion-television, competition. ? Stress on ante-penultimate syllable-third from end. ? words ending in cy,ty,phy and gy democracy, geology ? Words ending in-ive, relative, indicative. ? words ending in-al-critical, geological Compound words (words with two part) . For example nouns, the stress is on the first part-blackbird, greenhouse for compound adjectives, the stress is on the second part-bad tempered, old fashioned for compound verbs-understand overflow.
