UNIT 15 This unit looks at the different ways of evaluating students, their levels and progress and the exams teachers need to prepare students for. While overt feedback is important, the unit suggests a more formal method of testing language levels, including tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. It is necessary to understand assessment as a process ,and this makes sense in terms of placement and progress and so the unit sets out the available methods of assessment. While it is not possible to conduct individual tutorials every lesson, it is a good idea to spend ten minutes at the end of each lesson, reviewing and discussing progress in achieving the aims of the lessons is advised. The unit suggests that students may evaluate the course, through questionnaires and the results should be discussed in class. In addition to achievement tests, usually conducted internally at the end of a curse, there are external examinations offered by organizations such as Cambridge Assessment and proficiency tests which aim to measure proficiency in English at levels such as the European Framework Levels. Placement tests include multiple choice questions testing grammar and vocabulary that are increasingly difficult as well as written work that provides an indication of fluency level. This understanding is supplemented by the spoken component. The unit provides example material and requests us to evaluate this material in the task sheet. Progress tests should cover all four skills, reading, writing, listening, speaking. They should cover only issues dealt with in the course. Practice tests should follow the format of the external examination, examples of which are provided in the unit. These include TOEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language).
