This Unit teaches the different categories of students learning the English language . There can be many types of classes: 1. Beginners : These students have no knowledge of the language. Beginners can be categorized into : a. absolute beginners- students who have no exposure of the language b. false beginners - students who have some exposure of the language but cannot communicate in it c. young beginners - these students are children ranging from 10 to 16 years of age. d. adult beginners - these are generally 18 years and over and are very motivated e. beginners without Roman alphabet - these are students with very little or no literacy skills. The teacher should be patient with these types of students. They should give clear and simple instructions, use visual means as much as possible, revise constantly, beware of student's needs, encourage students to use English instead of their native language, avoid over-correcting the mistakes, should motivate the students by praising and encouraging them. 2. Individual Students : The teacher teaches one student and so the concentration and focus is on one student't needs. Since there are no other students, these type of classrooms lacks exposure to other students, seems boring and monotonous at times. The teacher should make the class interesting by using varieties of activities and techniques. The teacher can prepare activities based on the interest of the student. 3. Young Learners : The young learners are students whose age ranges from 2 yrs to 16 yrs. These students learn the language much easily. The teacher should take care of the fun learning activities as the children remember things when they are made interesting. The teacher should always use English as medium of communication, should speak slowly in short and direct sentences, play simple games, should be ready to make fun of themselves, keep set of reward stickers to encourage the children. The teacher should also be careful of the discipline in the class. Since small kids are high on energy, it is sometimes very difficult to maintain discipline and order in the class. The teacher should not issue threats, never inflict physical violence and should always be consistent. 4. English for specific purposes/ Business English : These students are generally from corporate companies. They know how to do business, but are not able to communicate in English. The teacher should get Needs Analysis and plan the classes accordingly. The classes can be one to one, in-company group or in-school group. It is very important to analyse the needs of the students and their strengths and weaknesses. The teacher should evaluate the students progress. It may be possible that these students would not do their homework or are low on energy , but the teacher should keep these things in mind that the students had attended the office and have personal lives. 5. Monolingual and Multilingual class - In multilingual class, the students are from various age groups and various nationalities, so the only common medium of communication is the English Language. This gives the students good exposure to different levels of language. In monolingual class, the students are generally from the same nationality. The class can be difficult as the students would try to communicate within themselves in their native language. The teacher has to ensure that he/she motivates the students to communicate in English Language.
