There are four different present tenses in English. The Present Simple, the Present Continuous, the Present Perfect and the Present Perfect Continuous. These 4 tenses need time and practice for students to learn to use and form them correctly. There is a \"formula\" for each tense that can be presented for each tense but at the same time there is always a list of irregulars that students will have to put to memory. The form changes a little from affirmative, negative and the question form. In addition, in present simple, you need to explain the rule with the third person verb and how \"I walk\" changes to 'she walks' or 'I try/she tries' which is one of the many irregulars. It also will take time to explain why you use this tense or that tense. Through the activation stage, a teacher can introduce common ways and examples of use in English that will help bring the grammar to life and the student understan the way we form the present tense. It will also take some extra explanation what is an auxiliary verb such as in the negative form of the present simple, \"I do not think....\" and that the \"do\" is an auxiliary verb. In addition, it is the same with the present continuous, and the form of the affirmative (subject + auxiliary verb 'be' + verb-ing). The teacher needs to explain that is the formula and that the 'be form' is an auxiliary verb assisting the meaning. There are many details that come naturally to a native learner but can prove tricky to a student of English.
