This unit introduced me to a wide variety of teaching techniques and methodologies, their distinguishing theories on teaching as well as the strengths and weaknesses in teaching they display when in practise. A particular focus was placed on Jeremy Harmer's ESA (Engage, Study and Activate) method. I learnt that this method in particular allows for a very well rounded learning experience for the pupil where the students are encouraged to discover language for themselves through much exposure to the language, a variety of educational tasks and both input and feedback from the teacher. I also learnt that errors and mistakes are not the same and not necessarily bad, but are in fact part of the learning process. Through such aforementioned errors and mistakes a teacher is able to identify gaps in the students learning and the teacher is then able to see what potentially needs focussing on in future lessons. A very important thing I feel I learned about correction techniques was the importance of not over correcting students, and when doing so to encourage the student/students to reflect on their mistake and self correct it potentially with the help of other students and/or the rest of the class. Generally only as a last resort should a teacher identify it to the student and directly correct it for them. In conclusion I feel I learnt much from this unit, and that it has given me a greater depth of understanding of the ins and outs of teaching methodology, theories and techniques.
