I enjoyed studying this particular unit. It was just basically a reminder as to how the teacher should conduct herself and holding the students attention. One tends to point a finger to a student to indicate that the student needs to answer etc, not realising that it could be intimidating, so therefore you could use other gestures such as good eye contact. You could use other gestures as well, for instance, putting your hand behind your ear, or use your hand to indicate when to stop or start. I would always say a students name first, then ask a question, but now I have learnt that it is better to first ask a question and then say a students name, that way the students will pay attention and be more interested. Grouping students is also very important. The teacher should bear in mind when grouping/pairing students, that those students he/she pairs with get on with each other and are comfortable. The teacher should avoid unnecessary Teacher talk time. Avoid using jargon, don`t over-elaborate, use language that is below the level being taught, keep it simple. Maintaining discipline in the classroom is also very important. This will depend on a few different factors, such as, the age of students, class size, respect between teacher and students, the atmosphere of the school. If there are behaviour problems, address it immediately, don`t wait. Focus on the behaviour and not the student, reseat students if necessary, but most importantly, keep calm, don`t shout because it does not help.
