The differences in teaching style between the first and second lesson were night and day. In the first lesson the teacher begins in a hurried, impatient way, jumping straight into the study phase without having first engaged the students. Moreover, the way in which he insisted how easy the content of the lesson was, without ever trying to explain it, had the effect of patronizing and discouraging the students rather than motivating them to learn. In the first lesson the teacher had made no effort to learn the names of the students. And in the activate phase, without having provided any example or clear directions to the assignment, the teacher is even seen reading a book while the students are supposed to be working on the assignment, even though it is very clear they are confused. When a student asks the difference between 'could' and 'can' he dismisses her entirely, telling her in a brusque manner that there simply 'is no difference'. Lastly, in the first lesson, when the class is over, the teacher abruptly ends the class, making it obvious to the students that he doesn't wish to be there, which is far from encouraging.
