Conditional forms are sentences containing if (or when etc.) which refer to past, present or future possibilities. There are two clauses, the if clause and the main clause and either can come in the past part of a conditional sentence. The if clause contains the condition that has to be satisfied before the action or state in the main clause can be realised. The five main conditionals are: Zero Conditional - if/when + present tense, present tense - refers to actions that are certain. First Conditional - if/when + present tense, will - talks about a real situation in the future that is possible, probable or even certain once the condition has been satisfied. Second Conditional - if/when + past simple, would, + base form - communicates a present/future unreal hypothetical situation that is presently not true and unlikely to ever be true. Third Conditional - if/when + past perfect, would, + have + past participle - refers to a hypothetical past action and a hypothetical result. Mixed Conditional - if + past perfect, would + base form - refers to a hypothetical past action or state and the hypothetical present consequence.
