This unit discusses evaluation and testing of students in an English as a second language course. The three main methods of evaluation discussed are tutorials, student evaluations of the course and their progress in the course, and testing. Testing is discussed in depth and is broken into five types of tests: Placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests, and external examinations included Cambridge Assessments. Placement tests are used to gauge students' language proficiency to decide which language course they should be placed into. Progress tests are used to determine students understanding of the material taught so far in a course and how the students' language skills are progressing overall during the course. Diagnostic tests are given at the beginning of a course to gauge students' entering level as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Practice tests are used to help prepare students for external examinations. External examinations assess individual's English language level and often offer a certificate or grading using established proficiency levels, such as the Common European Framework Levels.
