The focus of this unit is on types of testing and evaluation of the level of English. Depending on the purpose, be it ongoing feedback or getting an official certificate, there exists a wide range of evaluation tests. For instance, placement tests are designed to initially define how proficient a student is, in order for them to join the proper level group. Progress and diagnostic tests are used internally in schools to monitor and assess the students’ achievements. Finally, there are external international examinations, such as IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge exams (FCE, CAE, etc.). Upon passing them, a certificate, widely recognized for work and study purposes, is issued.
