In this unit the various parts of speech in the English Language were discussed. Along with a general outline for 8 common parts of speech, some excellent tips, rules, and exceptions were provided. For example, as a native speaker I have never thought about the order in which adjectives are listed, however I have now learned that most adjectives are listed in a size-age-color-material order. The eight main parts of speech are: nouns, verbs. adjectives, adverbs. pronouns, gerunds, prepositions/conjunctions, and articles. Nouns are classified as countable or uncountable, which dictates how they are used in a sentence (ie: one would not say \"a music,\" rather \"music\"). Articles can be definite or indefinite, \"a/an/some\" to describe generally, and \"the\" to identify individuals. Verbs are transitive (paired with an object), intransitive (no object), or infinitive (not conjugated). Adverbs are placed after an intransitive verb or after the object of an intransitive verb. All in all in this chapter I learned a lot about the parts of speech I have been using my entire life, but have never been able to explain or put a name to.
