Evaluation is an important step in the learning process. This can be accomplished in various ways. Tutorials, evaluation by the students, and testing are three options. Numerous testing options exist as well. Placement tests can be used prior to the start of a course to determine a student's language level. Progress tests are used throughout the class to evaluate the student's comprehension. Practice tests make students aware of what language will be required for the longer test at the end of the course. External examinations are not typically used in language schools. They are used, however, in programs like TOEFL. TOEFL is Test of English as a Foreign Language, and it is used before admission to English speaking universities. Tests have their place in the classroom as long as they are not overused. Tests are motivation for students to learn, but they also act as a progress marker.
