This unit introduced the use of evaluation and testing in ESL teaching. The unit focused on testing and while providing many different examples of tests, provided few other means of evaluation. While testing is useful and has its place, there are other ways of evaluating a students? progress, such as in-class monitoring, the use of workbooks, or other practical and productive assessment such as essays, diaries, conversations, letter writing, oral presentations etc. In terms of testing, I often observe students being taught English for an exam, rather than English for natural, everyday use. This is particularly evident when it comes to external testing, which is mentioned in the unit. While it is important for students to practice for such exams, simply teaching to the exam defeats the purpose of ESL learning; that is to be able to use English in everyday situations. As such, it is important to make sure that we as teachers are ensuring that our lesson are varied and contain many different types of activities, not just endlessly practicing multiple choice or fill-in-the blank exercise you would find in a typical English exam.
