I learned that there are different kinds of materials that can be used in the classroom and they have strong points and weak points. Authentic materials are from real life sources and are what students can expect to experience in the real world. There is an endless supply of authentic material and they are often interesting and topical. The problem is that it is hard to find authentic material that matches the level, needs, and interests of students. Created material can be adapted to match students' level, need, and interest, but it is much more time consuming and not always readily available. Course books are useful resources in the classroom and help both students and teachers understand the direction and progress of the course. They course books provide a good framework that students and teachers can rely on. However, they should not be expected to teach the students for the teacher. The teacher should adapt, omit, and supplement the course book content to best serve the students' needs.
