During Unit Three I learned various teaching methodologies, such as Grammar-Translation, Audio-lingualism, and the Lexical Approach, as well as the usefulness of ESA lesson plans. While studying I reflected upon my personal experiences learning French and teaching English, and analyzed which approaches will help me in the classroom in the future. I think the Presentation/Practice/Production method will be useful with lower-level students because it ensures the students understand the reasoning behind a particular aspect of the language and encourages creativity at the end of the lesson. I disagreed with the Lexical Approach because I know several people who can form some phrases in a foreign language, but their lack of grammatical knowledge leaves them without understanding and without the ability to form original phrases. True language learning is more than memorization and requires a level of analysis and critical thinking, which should be encouraged in the classroom. I also learned the importance of teacher feedback at the various stages of an ESA lesson, and that at times it is best not to correct every mistake a student makes.
