This unit dealt with teaching techniques for presenting new language - vocabulary and grammatical structures - to students. When selecting language to teach, one must consider: the appropriacy of the language to the students and task; teachability; and the frequency and coverage of the language being taught. For vocabulary, the teach should consider the pronunciation, meaning, and use when considering what words to teach. For grammatical structures, the teacher should consider use, meaning, and forms/patterns when building a lesson plan. There are many approaches to setting up the lesson, but patchwork and boomerang methods work better for grammar, while the straight arrow approach works well for vocabulary. Having studied languages other than English myself, I can relate these teaching points to experiences I have had as a student, so for me, I can correlate directly the different teaching methods at each level (i.e. gap fills, debate, role play, story building, etc.) with the success (or lack thereof) in learning various language/grammar points. I am interested to see, down the road, how this will manifest in lesson-building.
