Course materials can be divided into two broad categories: authentic and created materials. Authentic materials include any real-world materials not created for the classroom. These are advantageous because they appeal more to students and therefore help generate interest in the topics they cover, as well as boosting student confidence. However, they must be chosen carefully, as the teacher risks the materials falling outside the students' skill level. Created materials are useful in that they are created for the classroom and are therefore tailored to students' specific learning levels, but overuse of created materials can become monotonous and boring to students. Course books are an example of created material. They have many useful applications, including helping inexperienced teachers plan lessons and giving students practice with previously learned language. However, teachers should take care not to overuse course books, at the risk of boring the students. A good teacher will follow the course book generally, but supplement it with their own materials and style.
