This unit is about teaching receptive skills (reading and listening). I learned about the two reasons for reading and listening: for a purpose or just for entertainment/pleasure. I like how this unit points out that when learners read and listen, they not only have to understand the meaning of the words but also incorporate their pre-existing knowledge of the words. In order for a learner to comprehend a text, he/she needs to have predictive skills, ability to scan and skim and close-read for information and the ability to deduct from the context. It is suggested that teachers should be cautious in the language, topic, and tasks selection to ensure effective learning.
