For this unit on parts of speech, I was refreshed on many of the specifics of the parts of a sentence, the names of which I had forgotten since college. One of the most critical things I gleaned from this chapter was how easily and casually native English speakers, like myself, use all of these parts of speech in daily life and rarely think about their function or their necessity in forming the complex sentences we speak, write, and hear. Before this unit, I had not considered the tricky difference between possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives (for example, the multifaceted use of the word 'his' in a sentence). Interestingly, I think this unit will cause me to think about the ways I am using words in daily life so that I may take these reflections and use them to study from personal experience. Another aspect of this chapter that was informative was the section on gerunds. This was another characteristic of speech that I had not thought about since high school, and it was refreshing to go back and look at how the language uses words in multifaceted ways ( such as a verb being turned into the subject or object of a sentence ).
