Unit 18 informs about modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. This unit is particularly challenging because it covers concepts that we don't consciously consider most of the time. In school writing classes, we are often taught to use active voice, rather than passive, but we rarely discuss the ways we form passive versus active voice for each tense. The featured chart that shows the different ways that modal auxiliary verbs are used in English is helpful, particularly for defining levels of formality. This is important when teaching students the appropriate situations in which to use each type of modal auxiliary verb. The definitions of independent and relative clauses is fairly straightforward because the meaning of the sentence is diluted if the key information is removed. Finally, the section in this unit on phrasal verbs seems simple until the unit test. The example sentences in the unit are simpler than those in the test, so it became difficult to identify where the particles lay in the sentences. Bolding of the phrasal verbs and contingent particles would have been helpful for learning how to identify the correct sentences.
