Unit 14 grapples with the choice of whether or not to use a course book in the classroom and outlines the advantages and disadvantages of both options. When determining what materials to use in a lesson, a teacher should consider both authentic materials (ie. newspapers, movies, menus, etc) and created materials (ie. gap-fill worksheets, flashcards, picture stories). Unit 14 also includes some example materials, including a crossword, a word search, flashcards, picture stories, and a role-playing exercise. In my classroom, I am likely to use the course book as a general guide post for structuring my lesson plans, engaging with the course book where I find it most relevant and interesting. However, I will incorporate creative supplementary materials for many ?engage? and ?activate? stages, especially after I get to know the personalities and interests of my students. I think the key advantage of the course book is providing both the students and teacher with a general structure from which more tailored, unique activities and ideas can branch out. Applying a critical eye to course book materials is, however, essential.
