In this unit i managed to learn the following: Good Eye contact can - 1.show the students that they are involved with the in the lesson, 2.indicate who is to speak at the appropriate time, 3.encourage contributions, 4.ensure that students understand what they are supposed to do and what is going on, 5.hold the attention of students who are not being addressed, 6.maintain discipline, 7.signal students to start, stop or hurry up, 8.indicate that something is correct or incorrect, 9.be used to check that everybody is participating. Gestures can - 1.convey the meaning of language, 2.manage the class, 3.add visual interest, 4.increase the pace of the lesson, 5.reduce the need for verbal explanation. The teacher's Voice can have a great impact on the quality of the lesson. Using the right amount of clarity, range, variation or projection will make it less difficult for instructions or explanations to be understood. Using a students name can be used when you want to - 1.organize an activity, 2.get the attention of a student, 3.acknowledge the students, 4.indicate who is to answer or respond. Grouping students- pros and cons: Whole-class grouping - 1.Creates a sense of belonging with the whole group 2.Allows students to interact with all other students 3.Suitable for activities where the teacher has to be in control 4.Quicker and easier organisation 5.May cause shy students to not want to participate communicating in front of whole class 6.May reduce opportunities for students to speak Individual - 1.Allows teacher to give individual attention to help with pace of learning, ability, etc 2.Less stressful for students, 3.Helps the student become more self reliant 4.May restrict student to student interaction and group belonging. Pair-work - 1.Perfect for STT and student to student interaction 2.Allows teacher to work with certain pars while other continue their work 3.Allows student to share thoughts and ideas 4.Gives students a safe working environment to share ideas before presenting them to the whole class 5.Allows the students to share responsibility thus giving the student less burden 6.Easy to organize and quick 7.May cause the classroom to become noisy and the student may revert back to their native language and avoid using English 8.Some students prefer communicating with their teacher and may not like communicating with other students 9.Some students may find themselves having to work with other students they don't like Groupwork - 1.Similar to pair-work as this increases STT and student to student interactions 2.Personal problems are less problematic than in pairs 3.Students are able to choose their level of participation 4.Encourages students to communicate and negotiate in English 5.Class may become too noisy 6.Can take longer to organize and get started 7.Some students may be more dominant then others causing some students to be unable to participate 8.The exchange of ideas among group members may slow down activities Classroom arrangement should be done based on: 1.classroom space 2.furniture available 3.age of students 4.nationality 5.student personality Recommended styles for classroom arrangement - Orderly rows, Circles and horseshoes, and individual tables. The teachers position may vary based on the situation/lesson - the teachers role, what the students are expected to do, or the nature of the activity. Maintaining discipline is largely dependent on the following factors: 1.Size of the class 2.Age of students 3.Motivation of the students 4.If the students want to be there 5.Principles and atmosphere of the school 6.Respect between teachers and students Reasons for problem behaviour: 1.Family issues 2.Low self-esteem 3.Boredom 4.Peer pressure 5.Lack of respect for the teacher or other students 6.Class size And how to prevent it: 1.teacher is punctual 2.teacher is well prepared 3.teacher is consistent and fair 4.does not let personal feeling influence treatment of students 5.teacher makes sure never to make a threat they are unable to carry out 6.returns homework promptly 7.never loses temper 8.shows the same respect to the students as expected from them 9.makes sure the lessons are interesting and varied 10.enthusiastic about teaching 11.establishes rapport with the students.
