This unit covers two videos of completely different styles of teaching done by the same teacher and to the same students. There were many lessons that can be learned and so much that can be compared about the first lesson to the second. The first lesson was full of mistakes. The teacher started very monotone and unenthusiastically, which are all not helpful characteristics for a teacher in relation towards their students. He also speaks in cliche, teacher, grammatical language with the name of the grammar point he wants the students to repeat back to him with no introduction or help. (modal auxiliary verbs). He also says many times, \"come on this is so easy,\" which is rude and insulting to his students. His mistakes go on and on. He does not know names, he does not answer students questions but just dismisses them. There is no engagement of students, and no true phases even used for all the different parts of the lesson. There is no encouragement of the students, no smiling and it seems that the teacher is annoyed and bored even. He writes on the board for a long time with out even explaining what he writes, or the words, can swim and can't swim. He then passes out worksheets for each student and does not explain them at all. He then rudely points to the students as he wants to read through the worksheet. This is repeated multiple times with the same boredom and lack of enthusiasm. He also sits reading and bored while the students try to complete the worksheet. He also barely asks questions to check comprehension of what animals can and can't do, by saying \"two things a walrus can do?\" He gives no help with miming, pictures, etc. The last exercise he gives of creating an animal he cannot even give an example orally let alone by explaining and imaginary new animal and what it can or can't do. The second video is a drastic difference as the teacher introduces himself, and gives his name by writing on the board. he is positive and friendly from the start and wants to learn and see the names of his students. He explains that they will start with a game (engage), and he wants them to think of animals. He then passes out paper and places them in groups of two. They are told in 2 minutes to write down as many different animals as possible. The time frame and activity are made clear and the students are actively and happily involved. He then asks how many animals each pair has and they read them out and he writes them all on the board for all students copy and make a nice master list. Whatever animals were then not said that were on his worksheet that he was going to pass out for the study phase. He mimes the animals or shows pictures of them to help prompt responses from the students. He meanwhile is using the names of the students and smiling and encouraging them. He transitions from the animal list to movements, and writing a list of types of movements that animals can make. After this he explains logical example of how a walrus can crawl and swim, but it can't run. etc. After going over many examples of can/can't, he then explains, in detail what the worksheet looks like and how the space is where they write can or can't. The students are given an amount of time to work on the worksheet, and again in pairs. Afterwards he goes over the worksheet with the class, and he calls on them by name and randomly. He is quick to encourage and smile the students. He then asks for them through questions if they can generate two things this animal can do, or can't do which not just gives talk time but also checks comprehension. He then explains another worksheet well, and passes it out with a set amount of time to work on it. After all students give one example from their sentences they have written, they are explained after being shown a picture, and example of the teachers imaginary animal. He explains how this imaginary animal can do this and can't do that. They are then told in pairs to create an animal and then they share with the class. Overall, there are so many differences between the two lessons. The energy, and attitude of the teacher are so important. It is clear that all the positives of the teacher in the second video made the students activity and comprehension level spike so much. The second video was a great example of a successful and positive teaching style.
