Unit 15 was about evaluating and testing students. There are tons of ways how to assess student's language level. First we can find out by tutorials. We can spend some time for example at the end of the week and review and discuss the tasks the students performed, whether there are any problems, and basically review the work done. Another topic of this unit was evaluation done by the students. It's going be pretty handy to ask our students how do you feel about the course overall whether they feel they should get more vocabulary lessons or whether they feel it's balanced. We can ask them if the balance of skills work is OK with them or if it's just too easy or too difficult. We should not forget that some of the students might have too poor English for this sort of discussion so they might find it too difficult to discuss. Nevertheless in that case it is possible to have such discussion in this mother tongue. Tests We all know them. Many teachers prefer to give short regular tests rather than a longer, every term test. Those tests may be every week, month, term or just after finishing a certain amount of a material. In the beginning of the course, our students may be given a placement test, therefore it won't happen that there would be a group of students at a different level. There are two basic types of tests, one of them is a periotic progress test and another one is an achievement test which is usually given at the end of the school year or s course. Other testing options include external exclamation offered by for example Cambridge and proficiency tests that particular levels. We've got placement tests that help teachers to place new students into the right class according their language skills. These sort of tests are usually done with multiple choices, they usually start with simple question and become more difficult. It is useful to you song written part where the students have to use more expensive answers therefore it's easier for the teacher to find out their language level. Progress tests should be used periodically to calculate the language that has been remembered or not by the students. These kind of tests are useful to inform the teacher what his students are struggling with. They also encourage students to review the language. Progress tests should consist of reading, writing, speaking, listening. Teachers can use materials for the tests from teacher's book or they can use some unused exercises from the book to devise their own test. Diagnostics tests are quite similar in their content to placement test however sometimes they are more extensive. And they are given at the start of the course or the year to see what the students already know and what not. Hence it helps the teacher to know what areas students should be taught to understand it better. Practice test should have the structure of the external exclamations. Some of the most common external tests are: TOEFL which is a very popular American English exam, it's required by many US universities. The test is virtually all multiple-choice and includes grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening. It is used for all levels students can't pass or fail, but they only get a final score which equates their level. IELTS it's an international English language testing system which is a good test if a student needs to study or work somewhere where he needs to communicate. TOEIC is a test of English for international communication it is widely recognized of work-place in Japan and Korea, now they're becoming more popular in Europe. it is originally based on the TOEFL test, it lasts for 2 1/2 hour and it's got 200 multiple-choice questions, hundred questions for listening and hundred question for reading comprehension. Cambridge Assessment is a department responsible for a broad branch of assessments including the UK OCR examinations Board, Cambridge ESOL and Cambridge international exams. General English certificates are certificates us KET, PET, FCE which is very common among students, then there are more advanced exams such as CAE, CPE. There are also certificates for business English such as BEC. They are designed for students want to be prepared for English used in business. Then there is BULATS witch is a multilingual assessment service for companies that require a rapid and accurate means of assessing language skills in English, French, German, Spanish. The certifications mentioned above are some of the most known however there are many other examinations.
