This unit is about teaching special groups, there are 5 major groups when teaching English, teaching beginners, teaching young learners, teaching individual students, teaching business English, and multilingual and monolingual classes. When teaching beginners, there are different levels of beginners, there are the absolute beginners who don't know anything about the language or have no been exposed to the language. The false beginner which are students who once learned the language but have forgotten, or have been exposed to it before, i.e. music, radio, tv, etc. The adult beginners and young beginners, young learners can start from the age 2 up until 16. Then there is the beginner without Roman alphabet, which means teaching the students the very basics, the alphabet, writing and reading practice is a necessary. For beginner students it is important to always keep things clear and simple, encourage the students to speak as much English as possible, revise everything, and speak only English. For beginner students, teachers' especially shouldn't over-correct their students as they lose confidence and they should always be encouraging. Teaching individual students can have quite a bit of advantages as well as disadvantages. When only doing a 1 on 1 lesson, the teacher is able to only focus on one level and help the student improve more quickly. Unfortunately it can be difficult to do different activities and there is a loss of classroom dynamics. So when teaching 1 on 1, teachers should try to do many activities, learn the students interests to help improve lessons, and try to constantly change the lesson as you don't want every lesson to be predictable. Teaching children can be quite a handful sometimes but also quite fun, as it can be a lot easier for kids to learn the new language. Although, one of the problems when teaching children is that they can easily get distracted, so it is important to always change up the lesson. When teaching children, you want to always speak English, play lots of games that are fun but also help them learn the new language, don't be afraid to make fun of yourself as it always helps children feel more comfortable around you, and encourage them as much as possible. As a teacher, you need to be very patient with children and cannot lose your temper, never raise your voice or threaten the children. Making the lessons as fun as possible is the most easiest way to help children learn the new language. Business English is currently quite popular world-wide, unfortunately, many teachers believe they need to know about business when teaching Business English, which is definitely not the case. There are different types of ways when teaching business English, either 1 on 1, In-company group where you either teach before, during, or after work at the business, and In-school group which is where business people come to a language school to study English. It can be a little difficult teaching English to business people as the age difference can vary quite a bit, and in some cases, not all business workers always want to learn the language. It is important to keep in mind that the clients may not always be able to attend lessons because they could be busy and sometimes clients are so tired from work that they may not be willing to learn as much as you'd like them to. When beginning a business English course, the teacher should give out a Needs analysis to find out what the clients want and need to learn in the near future, this will help the teacher figure out what the company and clients want and need to learn, once being told all this information, the teacher is able to plan the next couple of lessons. Don't plan to ahead as you want to be able to see what is working and what isn't working in your plan, and what you might need to change to improve learning in your lesson plans. Monolingual class is where you learn English in the foreign country, this can be a little difficult as the students are not exposed to the language and are not forced to use it outside of the school. Although, one of the benefits is that because all of the students are from the same country, they all struggle with similar things which can help the teacher when teaching. Multilingual class is where students from across the world come to a different country, most likely an English country to learn the language. One of the biggest benefits with this class is that there is nothing in common with the students except for wanting to learn English. This doesn't encourage students to speak their native language with other students. Another benefit is that they are completely exposed to the language and are forced to practice using the language in their daily life outside of school. Just remember to try to keep things clear and simple, use gestures and images to help the students with learning the new language. These are all different groups teachers have to keep in mind when they are teaching a new language.
