This unit explained the differences between created materials and authentic materials, and the advantages and disadvantages associated with each. It was useful to see real examples of these created materials, such as the crossword and wordsearches - they will come in handy. Furthermore, I learnt that one need not necessarily use a course book to teach ESL, though it does offer a number of advantages, as well as disadvantages. If one does opt to use a textbook, one should think about factors such as the price of the course book, the design and the availability of the textbook among other things. In addition, the course book should be supplemented with created and authentic materials to cover the areas of the course book which may not be suitable for the students, or where more exercises are needed to teach a particular point.
