Unit 14 covers the topic of course books and supplementary materials that are used to provide a balanced syllabus and to support both the teacher and language students. The difference between authentic and created materials is examined, in addition to the advantages and disadvantages of course books. I found the unit useful because it presented guidelines for selecting a suitable course book based on factors such as availability, design, and difficulty. The unit also provided other sources of learning materials for classroom activities, including picture stories and role-play prompt cards. I learnt that a teacher should not depend on the course book for the whole lesson, and that materials created by the teacher are typically more interesting and relevant to the students because these materials can be geared to the needs and specific interests of the class.
