Peculiarities of the english Language The english language is a very complex and intricate yet simple and easier in some aspects. It is an interesting mixture of several other languages such as greek, German, Latin, and french just to name a few. It was created in England and has transcended throughout history, the world, and gained a lot of universal appeal. It is becoming a staple second language in many countries and the desire to learn it is growing at a rapid pace. A lot of the complexity in learning the english language comes from its irregularities. Some general rules can be formed at times to help teach a concept but then are broken by a verb, word, or structure that contradicts the rule (?i? before ?e? except after ?c?). For example, learning to spell can be difficult because there are words that sound identical but are spelled differently and have different meaning (wear, where). There are many words within the english language that have silent letters (kneel, know). Depending on what part of the world a person is in the same word may be spelled slightly different (color, colour). Also, certain letters put together can produce one sound in one word but a completely different sound within another word (tough, though). Teaching grammar can be difficult because there are irregular verbs and many rules as to when a person applies certain tenses and voices. Things can get lost in translation when translating english to another language or vice versa. Another alarming aspect is the double meaning that some words or phrases can have. Depending on how the phrase or word is used in the sentence determines its meaning. A phrase can go from being an action to describing something (turn on the light vs. intelligence is a turn on). All of these things can be very overwhelming and confusing when trying to study this language. One way to make the english language a little less overwhelming is to focus on the more simple parts of the english language at first and show how it differs from other languages. One aspect that makes english a little bit easier is the fact that nouns do not have a grammatical gender. This means adjectives and verbs do not have to be changed based on gender. The verbs are changed based on other rules that apply and adjectives apply to both singular and plural nouns. Another advantage and relatively simple part of the language to introduce is out numeric system. It is fairly straightforward in comparison to other languages. The cycle is easy to learn and follow since it stays the same (fifty-one, fifty-two, fifty-three). Other languages like spanish sort of follow a pattern but throw in some odd numbers every now and then (quince, catorce). Many people realize the difficulty and confusion that can be created and constantly work to create a more ?universal? english or some standard words and phrases that can be published that could be accepted by all. The phonetic alphabet is one such tool that is making it easier to unify the different variations of english. This is an alphabet that is universally accepted and understood. This alphabet is used to break down words phonetically so no matter where a person learns english is she or he refers to the phonetic pronunciation in a dictionary it will be the same. This is very helpful in assuring that some of the same principles are being taught throughout the world. The next step would be to come up with a base set of words and phrases that are commonly used and unify their spelling and publish it for teachers and those wanting to learn. The english language is an interesting language indeed. The fact that so many have taken a keen interest in learning and teaching it can only mean it will get better, continue to evolve, hopefully become more uniform, and expand the curiosity and desire the learn it to an even wider audience.
