Games in the classroomTeaching is essential in every classroom. The purpose is to educate students on what you believe is required for them if a course book doesn?t exist. However, sometimes the style in which one teaches reflects how successful a class will run. Most students will become bored if everything is straight out lectures, lessons and repetition for example. Showering them with games from time to time will spark up interest in the classroom. The following article will discuss the benefits of using games in the classroom. Without games, there is no growth. Thus, the success to students? learning must include selective games for future reference. Games determine ones? personality and their level of learning. Teachers must be cautious of the types of games that are introduced to students, because even with games some are more beneficial than others to certain students. Regardless of any games, everyone should have fun and learn from playing because play is the building blocks of our knowledge. Learning grammar is closely associated with playing games. According to (Vernon, 2006-2011), the article states that grammar is subconsciously absorbed when people play grammar games. Students practice, retain the knowledge, and learn the form through excessive grammar play. Games truly are amazing for successful student learning. Sometimes, the work that teachers put into each lesson can easily be summed up with games. Of course, both lesson and games work hand-in-hand together. But it is not doubtable the significance and impact that games have on students. Games can build better relationships between students and teachers, because students must work closely together and cooperate for effective play. At times, students can be competitive but that challenges and motivates students to try harder. In a sense, playing games gives off an indirect message to never give up because you never know until you try because there will always be change, or a surprise in the process of one?s learning. Intrinsic motivation as mentioned in (Vernon?s, 2006-2011) article, emphasize the importance of playing games that are fun. In fact students do not realize the importance of how grammar affects their life, changes their speaking abilities, and broadens their knowledge. Teachers must find ways to make their lesson interesting even if the topic poses difficulty for students. Repetition is ideal. Introducing games and new ideas to retain the knowledge over studying it right off the book would further interest the students, increase motivation and perhaps self-learning. Games with a purpose work best, because you want students to know what it is that you want them to get out of the lesson. It could be using worksheets, reading off a book, etc. Any games that students play should somehow always relate back to the lesson or the proposed topic so there is consistency. As quoted by Hong in (Vernon?s, 2006-2011) article, before games are introduced many factors must be considered. The game must match the students? english level ability, what skills it is supposed to serve, what kind of game is it, how many people is required to play the game, if students like or dislike the game, etc. At times, games help to lower anxiety and students participate more because they feel comfortable (Uberman, 1998). Playing to learn is the model that most people follow, because students can relate this to real life; and everything makes more sense when they are making use of their knowledge through examples in class. Everyone needs some kind of game so life could be rewarding. It is good to know what wants and needs are healthy for the upbringing of a student?s learning. Helping students achieve that and ensuring that learning is possible through games will allow students to see education in a whole new light. Creativity will always be appreciated by students and sometimes laughter will make a day end right; because I know, you know, and even students all know how happy games can make them feel. Learning can be fun, so you?d better believe it! References Uberman, A. ?Using Games.?
