Problems For Learners in the Middle EastLanguage is the most important part of communication. It is the most effective tool which human beings depend on to express feelings, emotions, thoughts, wants, needs, desires and many other important aspects of self. Without language, expression would be quite difficult. Although there are many other forms of communication and expression (i.e. sign language, Morse code, etc.), language is the most powerful, and is the only form of communication that allows expression to be understood through tonation. In addition to language being the most effective tool for communication, it also can be very different and varies from nation to nation. Every nation has its own national language and set of native languages or dialects. The Middle East is no exception. In most countries in the Middle East, the national language is Arabic. Middle Easterners express themselves and communicate with each other using various dialects of the Arabic language. It is well known throughout the world that english is the global language. Natives of the Middle East are not new to this well-known fact. The desire to learn english is quickly running rampant throughout the entire Middle East, and the demand for more native english speakers is causing an increasing number of expats from neighboring countries to be brought over to teach english to the natives. Although the desire to learn english is present and is extremely strong, the obstacles that Middle Easterners face often times can be quite discouraging and demotivating. There are numerous problems that the Middle Eastern english language learner faces during his/her journey of learning english. As mentioned previously, the main language spoken in the Middle East is Arabic and is the language that is primarily spoken both inside and outside of the home. Because it is the language primarily spoken, there is not much exposure to the english language and not very many chances to learn english during day to day interactions. Most english language learners get the majority of their exposure through television and english magazines. The problems Middle Eastern students face focus mainly on pronunciation and grammar. However past experiences suggest Middle Eastern students problems in learning english usually spring from the following reasons: a) school graduates have lack of information regarding the University or college they enrolled in; b) there is deficiency in the english language curriculum offered by some schools and Universities; c) poor teaching methodology; d) problems with excellent language environments; and e) lack of personal incentive on the part of the students. It is also very well known that Middle Eastern english language learners: a) have poor communication skills which accompany weakness in expression; b) make gross lexical errors; c) commit syntax errors in the composition of english passages; d) and many are weak when it comes to tense, verb structure and subject-verb agreement. However, the great majority of problems that the Middle Eastern english language learner faces have to deal with sound and spelling. The areas of pronunciation, morphology, syntax and phonics present themselves as a huge struggle for ESL learners in the East. Although there are many problems that the Middle Eastern english language leaner faces, their desire, drive, and tenacity to learn english is more powerful than any grammar, phonetic, or syntax obstacle that they could ever encounter. Many have been successful and many will continue to be successful at mastering the english language.
