This unit went over the two productive skills of speaking and writing, which are both of equal importance when teaching English. However, teachers sometimes do not spend as much time as needed on writing within the classroom and mostly assign writing activities for home practice (often which does not get completed). This unit went over the importance of teaching both productive skills and how to do so in a way that keeps the students engaged, motivated, and gaining confidence. A teacher must know his or her students in order to carefully select appropriate texts and topics that will be of interest and value to his or her class. To get students of all ages engaged and eager to learn, communication games are an effective and fun teaching and learning resource tool to employ. It must also be noted that a challenge with writing tasks could be the writing itself (i.e. English alphabet letters, punctuation, informal/formal formats etc). A teacher must be aware that grammar rules in regards to writing differ among languages, as well as be aware that English is not a phonetic language and will therefore cause some challenges with new learners (i.e. their, there, they're - all sound the same but have different meanings). It is important that a teacher corrects mistakes made individually or collective mistakes collectively as a class before they become rooted in the learner/learners' knowledge bank of the English language. Lastly, a straight arrow ESA lesson is a basic and effective way to carry out a lesson for the two productive skills.
