Engage, study and activate is a teaching method that works best for new teachers as they learn and apply it for their students. It gives each student a chance to be involved and restricts teacher talk time, which, is a good thing. Plus the teacher can be flexable in each lesson, to make them less predictable, by alloying the boomerang and patchwork styles of ESA. There are a great deal of activities and exercises that can be used as well to keep students stimulated and interested. For example, in the engage (warmup) phase you can use word-linking to help with their new vocabulary and creative thinking. Linking words like static-camel-lucky-young-giant can make word-linking engaging for the whole class. Another example is in the activate phase where you can have class make projects of putting together travel brochures or advertisements. They work in groups recreating their own versions of ads and brochures, then presenting to the class the final work. Engage phase isn't a good point to make corrections as a teacher, however, if absolutely necessary, a teacher can intervene during the activate stage so as to help dispel any incorrect ingrained habits of the new language concepts learned from the Study phase. In addition to eliciting as much as possible during study phase, the teacher should ask by using the student's name as last word in the question. This keeps focus high for all the students because any of them could be chosen, except if the teacher specifically chooses a student by using an open hand to aim in his/her direction.
