In this short unit we learned about introducing new language to the class. This is looked at in three sections- grammar, vocabulary and function. We had a review in each area of what type of lesson structure would work well and techniques that would help in each phase of a lesson. For example, when we are developing a vocabulary lesson and are trying to choose words, the teacher should consider the possibilities based on teachability, frequency, and appropriateness to the class. Then setting up the engage stage the teacher could take the words (food theme) and elicit responses of favorite foods with pictures and then showing on the board the selected vocabulary for the lesson. Following this, studying could be looking at menus and picking out the vocabulary words introduced in the engage phase and also a worksheet for gap-fill. Finally, in the activate phase, working in pairs the students could create a menu poster for their very own restaurant to share with the class. This straight arrow structure example was selected as a structure that would work well during a vocabulary lesson. The other areas of Grammar and Function were also discussed in the same manner. Grammar would cover the meaning of the word, structure and form as well as how it would be used. Functions of language would teach how to go about its delivery. Inviting and Agreeing are two types of functions that have to be taught so the student would know what language goes into an invitation and how to deliver it if its going to be formal, informal, or business group.
