Unit 7: Reading and Listening Reading and listening are essential parts of language study. They are broken down into two groupings; receptive, reading and listening, and productive, speaking and writing. Specialized skills employed by readers and listeners are, predictive skills; predicting an articles content based on the headline. Specific information scanning; this is skimming a text for specific names numbers and terms. General idea skimming is where one looks for specific content. Detailed information is gleaned often by reading the entire text for details. Another important term is deduction from content, this is the gleaning of information from individual words or phrases often found on signs, usually used in life as guidelines. Pre-teaching vocabulary before a topic is introduced is a good way to reinforce the lesson and to help students take more away from content and the lesson. Students should also be encouraged to read materials even if they do not understand all of the words in the text. This being said, texts should be selected that appeal to and interest students, as with exercises. Depending on student level non-authentic texts can be helpful to teach and convey a message, to engage the class, but authentic texts can give students a sense of accomplishment, even if all the words are not understood. The utilization of reading and writing can have a great influence to support and further lectures and listening based learning. They can help reiterate and support lessons, vocabulary, grammar, and function of the language lesson.
