For a teacher to learn how to lesson plan and prepare lessons, the course book that they have available plays a big role. Many times a teacher is not free to pick their own course book. When this situation occurs it is good to the teacher to remember to address the course book critically and to think about how they can use it for their students. This means that at times they may need to cut out certain elements from the book, supplement certain lessons, adapt them to fit their needs and style and or replace certain activities with something else. Course books can be great guidelines and tools for a teacher because it can be a tried and true method, but at the same time there also many different disadvantages. The course book can be limited and not meet the needs of the teachers class, or it could be too predictable. Also, teachers can become lazy with the course book and no longer engage their students interests. The course books also bring many advantages, such as ease for the teacher, ideas and ready material. Also, the syllabus helps the teacher track progress and have a balances lesson plan with grammar, vocabulary and skills. While the course books can be helpful, a teacher would still do best to work with the course book in a way where they bring their own material to the lessons, and also do not feel trapped to use only the course book. A teacher will possibly notice elements that the course book does not cover for their student group, and therefore in that situation would do their students the best good if they adjust the course book in some way.
