Unit 19 discusses the different types of students and teaching environments an EFL teacher may encounter, with a focus on particular adaptations of techniques for specific groups. Much of the information in previous units is geared toward teaching a general English class. This unit provides information on the specialized requirements for teaching English for a specific purpose, such as business. The needs and goals of the students, as well as the learning environment and design of the lessons all must be adapted to the particular situation. A teacher does not need to be an expert in the specialized field, but does need to consider the specialized circumstances of the students in his/her approach to teaching the required language. This unit also covers classes of different language levels and ages. The considerations and techniques for teaching children are drastically different from those for adults. Likewise, a class of absolute beginners will require teaching methods and lesson plans with different elements than would be required by a class of intermediate students. Young beginners, adult beginners, and those without the Roman alphabet will each require a particular approach and set of skills. Not all EFL teaching is for a classroom, either. One-on-one teaching has a particular dynamic and demands preparation and application that is, in many ways, not at all like that for teaching a large class. Despite the specifics for any of these special groups, one thing remains the same -- teaching always requires paying attention to and adapting for the needs of one's students.
