The unit took us on a historical journey by learning all the teaching methodologies used throughout many centuries, beginning with the Classical Method, which basically explained the grammar-translation approach. This method uses straight translation from the native language into the target language. One of the major flaws of this method is that it is not communicative, and does not teach speaking skills. Other methods mentioned were The silent Way Method, where by using color rods of different colors, one can construct language in a useful way. We further discussed Task-based Learning and Audiolingualism, which both focus on drill-based activities or tasks (in case of the first one), and drill pronunciation(for the second one). Furthermore, we progressed unto ESA, which is the most modern approach to language learning. ESA can be applied to all levels of English learners. ESA explains the three basic phases of language learning -Engage (getting the students to speak English); Study- where we formally address vocabulary, sentence structure and content, last but not least; Activate- where we place into practice old language skills by adding the new methods and vocabulary relevant to the subject discussed through meaningful activities. All these methodologies are an intrinsic part of the Nature-Nurture theory where a balance needs to be established between intelligence and rigorous practice. ESA has different approaches such a Boomerang and Patchwork, where ESA can be applied through differentiated waterfall techniques to achieve greater results to future English practitioners.
