This lesson provided the opportunity to learn about the most effective way to plan and implement an English lesson: the Engage, Study, and Activate method. The engage phase takes stock in the language abilities of the learner and scaffolds the learner towards new material. There can be many fun and interesting activities to get students interested, involved, and using their English language ability. The entire lesson is not taught at this point, it serves to warm the student up towards the tasks presented in the next phase: the Study phase The Study phase can consist mainly of doing worksheets so students can practice and get guidance towards mastering the lesson objective. There is more teacher monitoring and guidance as students check their understanding. The study phase also encourages some collaboration as small groups of students work together towards acquiring new language concepts in the lesson. The Activate stage allows students to put their newly learned concepts to use; they practice the work they've mastered in the Study phase in fun and interesting activities. They can role-play, do surveys, produce materials, play games, build stories, or hold debates and discussions (for more advanced learners). There are a few effective ways of configuring lessons under this framework, including the Patchwork and Boomerang lesson structures. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The unit concludes with some ideas regarding mistakes and errors, and provides useful guidance on the kind and frequency of corrective techniques teachers should use, with consideration towards student cultural background, age, and ability.
