This unit covered modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, relative clauses and phrasal verbs. Modal auxiliary verbs are used before other verbs to give meanings to the verbs. They can be used to express different ideas such as obligations, skills or abilities, requests, advice or probabilities. They don't change when using it from person to person and have present/future forms as well as a past form. Modal auxiliary verbs can be used to not only to give meaning to the verbs but also make sentences less or more formal in comparison to other modal verbs. For example, \"can\" used to make an informal request, while \"could\" and \"would\" can also be used to make a request in a more formal manner. The passive voice is opposite to the active voice in that the focus is taken away from the subject and the emphasis is placed on the object. The passive voice can be used for a few reasons including not knowing who or what the subject of a sentence is, determining that the subject is unimportant, or for when we don't want to say who the subject is. There are three groups of clauses, independent, dependent, and relative. Relative clauses can either be defined or undefined and are indicated by the presence or lack of commas. Lastly, phrasal verbs are multiple word verbs that are made up of a verb plus one or two particles. Phrasal verbs can be difficult to learn because of how frequently the added particle changes the verb, therefore it should be taught as a vocabulary point as opposed to a complete grammar lesson. Allowing students to understand phrasal verbs in different contexts will allow them to see the different usages more easily.
