Through this unit, my understanding of the importance and variety of different teaching techniques has expanded greatly. Mostly I have believed that repetition and grammar translation exercises make up the bulk of English lessons, when really that is not the case. There is a lot of room for creativity within a teacher's lesson plan. I come from a linguistic study background and I am very glad to see emphasis in the Audio-Lingualism methodology in combination with the different engage/study drills. The different methodologies offer new teachers an array of options to explore and define their personal teaching style. This unit provides great examples of activities for each stage in the lesson and which are appropriate during the Engage, Study, and Activity phases. The teacher talk-time and student talk-time suggestions are made clear in this chapter as to when each are beneficial and during which practices. The flexibility of ESA methods such as the boomerang and patchwork approaches allows new teachers to experiment and form classes that are filled with excitement and spontaneity when appropriate. Feedback can be a sensitive area depending on the students cultural background, age, and the individual. Positivity is always the most important theme when correcting students. Also, a teacher must bear in mind when correcting should and should not take place as well as the tone/manner in which the teacher utilises while giving constructions. A teacher should not give the answer flat out to a student, rather first have the student identify that there is an error, attempt to see where their mistake is, and what kind of correction needs to be made.
