There are 9 modal auxiliary verbs, verbs that combine with another verb to give additional information about the function of the main verb, and they are used to express or indicate any of the following:- an obligation, possibility, permission, ability, advice, deduction, offer, predication, prohibition, promise or a request, in other words to allow the speaker to express a certain modality. eg:- PERMISSION - Can/may I drive your car? ADVICE - You should study your homework. Examples on how to each modals starting with the elementary levels. Introduce a verb and build use the modality. eg Using CAN ABILITY - I can ride my bike. PERMISSION - You can marry her. POSSIBILITY - We can go to the beach next week when we are on holidays. The next section of the unit deals with the two voices, passive and active. The passive voice is formed by the making the object of the sentence the subject. eg John painted the house - active The house was painted by John - passive The challenge for the students will be using the correct tense of the verb. The final section of the unit deals with the 3 Phrasal Verbs - Intransitive, Transitive separate, transitive inseparable. Transitive verbs need an object - I saved up my money to a buy a new car (object car) Intransitive - They walked so fast I could not catch up ( no object)\\ Transitive separate/inseparable - in order for a phrasal verb to be separate you must be able to separate the two words and put the direct object in the middle - eg SEPARABLE Please turn of the TV Please turn the TV off. INSEPARABLE I will look after your children after school I will look you children after after school - INCORRECT
