english as a Global LanguageThere is growing evidence that english will be the premier language of Earth. This evidence comes from economic, scientific, and cultural trends. These trends will likely continue even if a political or economic calamity happened to all the english speaking countries. Primarily, because over 750,000,000 people on Earth speak english to some degree of competence, english has become the adopted language of the world (http://www.englishenglish.com/english_facts_5.htm. Foreigners from non-english speaking countries speak english more often than any other language because it is the common denominator. Economically, english is used as a business language worldwide because of the combined dominance of commerce by America, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In those countries alone there are about 400,000,000 people. More importantly though is that those countries make up about a quarter of the world?s GDP. By necessity, people speak english for business. Scientifically, America alone is a dominating country with its innovation in technology. Having already established first-world countries like the United Kingdom only increased the need for students and teachers alike to learn english in order to keep abreast with the latest happenings in their fields. Waiting for an article or a book to be translated is a time consuming process when there is so much fierce competition to be the most innovative. Culturally, it is stunning how dominate America is with its movie and music industry. Countries around the world try to emulate english-speaking cultures like America. In fact, Hollywood generates about half of its revenue outside of the US. And it is a little known fact that American made movies are the most pirated movies ever. David Crystal stated in his book, ?english as a Global Language?, that other minor languages become irrelevant as time goes by and they eventually die off. The majority of these languages are tribal dialects from various regions around the world where the native population is dwindling and/or assimilating with a larger population. Eventually, though, it may be possible that a language like Korean will become extinct. Granted the process would take a long time perhaps two hundred years, but it should be examining. In the part of Korea that I live in right now, Jeju, the local dialect is becoming extinct. There is a local effort to preserve it, however, I suspect it will fail because of my past experience with similar situations. The reason behind my rationale is that there are many italian-American and chinese-Americans who don?t speak their great-grandfather immigrant tongue because they couldn?t practice it and there was no need to. Those are difficult obstacles for a language like Korean to overcame when english is becoming more common to use every day in the country. The thing that stands out the most to me is that quite a few Koreans themselves discourage me from learning their language and many foreigners don?t. However, I want to learn because I tend to stay in Korea for a long time and it is good to for my brain to learn a new language, even if it has a marginal use outside of Korea. It?s the Korean attitude towards foreigners learning their language and their high proficient and usage of english that makes me suspect that Korean will eventually be replaced with english. english for the foreseeable future and perhaps till the end of time will be the dominate language of Earth. Many people speak it and prefer it to any other language. english even has a chance to replace all the languages on Earth eventually in this age of technology. http://bcis.pacificu.edu/journal/2004/06/crystal.php http://www.englishenglish.com/english_facts_5.htm
